Eldheimar – Volcano Museum
The eruption in Vestmannaeyjar started in the early hours of January 23rd, 1973. News of the eruption, that permanently would change the island, traveled fast around the world and when it finally finished, reporters, tourist and scientists from all over the world flocked to Heimaey to see with their own eyes how powerful nature can be. Lava and ash covered 2,5 km2, about 20%, of the island, and a new volcano, Eldfell, had risen 220m tall and Heimaey was now 2 km2 bigger than before.
Now 40 years later Eldheimar open, a museum of remembrance, giving visitors the chance to go back in time and learn about this dramatic event.
Comfortable, perfect location, and amazing service
A wonderful welcome to the island. Hotel Vestmannaeyjar ticked all the boxes—value for money, great service, great breakfast, and clean rooms—I only wished we had time to test out the sauna and jacuzzi room! Magnus was an amazing host, with a local’s knowledge and expertise. Puffin spotting, tasty restaurants, and great hikes. Really was a joy and we will stay there again!
Comfortable, Clean, Good Value
A great choice on Heimaey. Good sized rooms, very clean, with standard European business hotel furnishings. Very good restaurant, with excellent breakfast buffet included. Friendly and helpful management. Good value in expensive Iceland.
Great visit to the island
We had a great visit to the island and very nice stay at the hotel. It was clean, comfortable and good size. The owner was extremely helpful and assisted in recommendations of places to eat and do. Breakfast included had a good selection of items.
Beautiful hotel and space
Very lovely hotel with helpful staff. Rooms were spacious and the bathrooms were great with hot shower and different settings. Hot tub sign is misleading – says it is on the third floor but you actually go on an adventure to the basement. Great two night stay and best blackout curtains I had my entire stay in iceland.
Perfect place to stay
Easy walk to Fiskibarinn for a fabulous fish dinner, and around the corner from Stefan Bakery where we picked up a ham and cheese croissant and pastries for a picnic lunch. Loved the hot tubs with an Asian spa setting, especially after a cold and rainy day outside. Special thanks to Magnus at the front desk for his kindness in giving instructions for hiking paths and puffin locations, as well as a history of the volcano’s impact on families. We would definitely stay here again.
